6. We continue to receive weekly donations from our lottery tickets. The graph shows our progress towards our target for the year based on tickets held. Remember, the more tickets we hold the more donations will be received from the HBC lottery fund. We had a first prize winner in the 7th June draw and he has very generously donated the prize of £250 to WMS. A very big thank you to you.

7. The history in your tool box:- (5) Boring tools

Wood boring tools have a rich history, evolving from basic hand- powered tools to sophisticated machinery. Early tools included spoon augers for larger holes and gimlets for smaller ones, used since ancient times for timber-framed buildings and general woodworking. The ability to bore accurate holes was important in early house building. Tudor buildings were constructed using joints strengthened by pegs. The peg holes would have been produced by the craftsman using an auger like those in the picture above.

To the left is a timber frame boring machine dating back to 1872. This works like a home gym for an arm muscles workout but was very efficient. To the right are examples of gimlets and bradawls. Primarily used for smaller and pilot holes. There is an original held at the Amberly Chalk Pits Museum.

Why is an auger called an auger?

The Old English ancestor of auger was nafogar, which was made up of nafu and gar, meaning “spear.” By Middle English nafogar had lost a syllable and shrunk to nauger. Since a nauger sounds like an auger, people began to write an auger, and our modern spelling of the word was born.

August edition: (6). Chisels and gouges

Parish Notices. A couple of reminders: -

1. We have a wide range of tools and equipment available at the Shed and there is no reason why they can’t be borrowed for an ongoing project at home. If you do borrow something, please ensure it is entered in the log, located in the galley. It isn’t that we don’t trust members, but a certain piece of equipment was needed for a task at the Shed but couldn’t be found when required and no one could remember it going

2. On the subject of tools, if you find you are using an electrical tool that has either no PAT sticker on it or is out of date for a test, please place it in the electrical workshop so our resident PAT man, Peter Sanders, can carry out a safety check on it and return it to the ready use shelf again.
